Burgess Relatives

Amos Dawson 1802 married Mary Parlee Black 1806.
Their 3rd child was Amos Dawson Jr. 1829. Amos Jr. married Rebecca Burgess. Rebecca Burgess has been difficult to find in the research; all the Burgess relations have had similar problems finding this family. However, we now have some data from a few people: Aimee and Susan.

Aimee is from Rebecca's line while Susan is from Rebecca's brother. So that is nice-- to have confirmation of the information from two directions. Much thanks to both for their work. Contact linl for them is accessed by clicking into their underlined name.

Details of the children of Joseph Jr. and Percy

Burgess family lived and worked on the Easterly Farm, a few thousand acres in Cocke Co., near Greene Co.

Rebecca married Amos Dawson Jr. Feb. 14, 1848. (How romantic. Did they have Valentine's Day back then???)

They married in Greene County, Tenn. which borders on Cocke. Her brother Coleman's widow was living In Greene Co. in 1870.
Rebecca was born 1829 in SC and died about 1870 in Maury Co., Tenn. (Amos remarried Liz Crumley after Rebecca's death).

William

William Burgess is in Union Co in 1850, then vanished. Later he was in Cocke Co TN. Nearby was Joseph Burgess.
William had lots of sons, but so far only one has been located.

Coleman (Colman) married Feroby (Pheroby)

Colman was shown in Cocke Co. census in 1850 along with father, mother, and siblings.
In 1860 census he is shown with his own family.
Colman and brother Asburry enlisted in Confederate Army.
Coleman died during the war, Jan 6 1863.
Coleman's widow Feroby was living In Greene Co. in 1870. When she remarried to Francis Polshire in 1883, her name was spelled Pharaba M. Burgess.
Children of Colman and Feroby are:
1. Martha C. (married Jacob Swatzell 1873) In 1900 Martha had 3 Burgess neices living with her. May have been Joseph's.
2. Joseph (married Florence Smith 1880) Joseph can't be tracked. He may have died which led to placing neices with Martha. ...still speculation at this point.
3. Mary Jane b. 1859, d. 1909, (married James H. Wolaver/Woliver/Wooliver1881). Had 2 daughers (Lela, Lucy, 2 twins (Ola & Ollie, died at birth), and Love Iona Wooliver Phillips who is the ancestor(grandmother) of our contributor, Susan.
4. Sometime after the marriage in Greene Co., they moved to Knoxville to raise the family.
5. Greene Co. Tn. 1870 census, Martha C., Mary Jane and a younger sibling Colman J. – Can’t find Joseph or their mother, Feroby. I’m sure this is a misspelling of her name. I don’t know if they are with their Mom, relatives or orphans.
6. Here are pictures of Mary Jane and her husband James, courtesy of Susan Will, who notes: "In one of the pictures she is wearing a star of David pin. She is a black-haired beauty with dark eyes and very fragile features. "

- Paroled in the field, Vicksburg, Mississippi, Civil War.
Sarah
- Sarah married David Owens
- David Owens, Sarah's husband, was in the Union Army, and died.
- Sarah tried to take her children back to SC, but only made it to NC. One of the oldest sons tried to go on but was not heard from again.
